Flint Michigan, the best Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Gym in Michigan, the Ultimate Fighting Academy (UFA) headed to Lansing and represented the Flint area as Bruce Merrill went 3 rounds to take a unanimous decision over Kory Curtis.
The second fight on the evening’s card, members of Team Andres Garcia (TAG), walked with Bruce to the cage as coach Garcia gave final instructions to his fighter. As the first round started the two fighters traded jabs in the center of the ring. When Kory came at Bruce throwing an overhand right, Bruce changed levels and drove Kory onto the cage and worked a double leg. Once Bruce secured the double he picked up and slammed Kory to the matt. Having side control Bruce went to work with some ground and pound to the body and head. After loosening his opponent up Bruce secured a tight Arm Bar attempt but Kory able to complete a sweep and escape the Arm Bar. The first round ended on the ground with Bruce in control.
The second round went similar to the first round as Bruce once again executed a double leg take down controlling the ground game. The ref stepped in and brought the fighters to their feet. Kory looked to take advantage of being up and landed a left to Bruce’s chin. Bruce stepped in landed the hardest shot of the fight with right hand that sent Kory back a few steps and Bruce moved in with another take down.
After ten minutes of hard fighting and grappling both fighters entered their 3rd and final round and ended up going the full 15 minutes. In the 3rd round Bruce was able to gain full mount and side control throughout but was unable to take his opponent out with ground and pound.
The fight was a crowd pleaser as the fighters displayed excellent skill in both the stand up and ground game. The crowd cheered as the Bruce was announced the unanimous winner (30-27) on all cards.
